The Snodgress Kitchen
Kitchen Renovation | Santa Barbara, CA
A renovation focused on transforming an existing kitchen with solid structure into a fresh, modern space. I provided design services including finish selection, cabinetry refinishing strategy, material specification, lighting design, and coordination with contractors for structural and electrical updates. My role included creating the overall design vision, selecting countertops and hardware, specifying paint and stain finishes, and overseeing installation to ensure cohesive results.
Challenge
The kitchen had good bones but felt outdated and dark. The client needed a refreshed, energized space without the cost and disruption of a full gut renovation. The goal was to maximize the existing layout and cabinetry while modernizing finishes, improving lighting, and creating a brighter, more inviting atmosphere for a busy family who enjoyed entertaining.
Design Solution
Rather than replacing cabinetry, I designed a refinishing approach using carefully selected paint and stain to breathe new life into existing elements. We installed a new beam to accommodate updated electrical and enhanced lighting, transforming the room’s ambiance. Outdated tile on the island was replaced with warm hardwood, adding contrast and visual interest.
New quartz countertops replaced worn surfaces, providing a clean, durable finish that brightens the entire space. Strategic lighting additions created layers of illumination, making the kitchen feel more open and inviting. Updated window coverings and thoughtfully chosen knobs and pulls complete the transformation—elevating the space from cabin-style to modern retreat while honoring the kitchen’s original structure.
